Carrie Underwood was the butt of host Peyton Manning’s jokes at Wednesday night’s CMA Awards. Manning poked fun at the former American Idol winner for her unamused reaction to a joke made by co-host Luke Bryan at last year’s ceremony.

Peyton Manning Jokes About Carrie Underwood at CMAs

While opening this year’s CMA Awards, Manning mentioned that he and Underwood “have a lot in common.” He went on to joke, “We’ve both worked with Brad Paisley, we’ve both been on Sunday Night Football a lot, and we’re both very nervous about what Luke Bryan might say tonight.”

The joke seemed to be a reference to last year’s ceremony, when Bryan joked about Underwood’s husband Mike Fisher supporting NFL star Aaron Rodger’s stance on Covid-19 vaccines.

As Page Six reports, Bryan joked in 2021, “Rest assured, we’re following all the health protocols to keep everyone safe, and it is so great to be here with all my fellow artists — tested and together. Or immunized?”

The term “immunized” was used by Rodgers to describe himself after not receiving the vaccine. At the time Bryan made the joke, the camera cut to Underwood, who gave a side eye. Page Six points out that Underwood liked Fisher’s post in support of Rodgers last year.

Underwood’s Fans Are Disappointed by Her Lack of Wins

Underwood was nominated for three awards at this year’s CMAs, and she didn’t win any of them. That includes Entertainer of the Year, a category she’s been nominated for several times but never won. Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment.

“Carrie Underwood doesn’t need the #CMAawards,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “The CMA Awards desperately need Carrie Underwood. As a fan that’s the most frustrating part, watching year after year of disappointment. I honestly don’t know why she gives them the time of day anymore, bc I say let them sink.”

Another fan shared a similar sentiment in an Instagram comment, calling it a “slap in the face to Carrie and her fans to ONCE AGAIN capitalize on her name and talent to rake in ratings but refuse to give her Entertainer of the Year which she is WELL overdo [sic] to receive!”

Although Underwood didn’t walk away with any awards on Wednesday, she did take the stage to perform a tribute to late country star Loretta Lynn alongside Miranda Lambert and Reba McEntire. The singer also gave a solo performance of her song “Hate My Heart.”
