A new theory suggests that American Idol judge Katy Perry might have had her music career sabotaged by the media. More than one journalist has spoken out about how they covered (or didn’t cover) Perry’s music at major publications.
Was Katy Perry’s Music Career Sabotaged?
On Wednesday, celebrity news account Buzzing Pop posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a former journalist for the Observer and the Huffington Post had suggested the decline in Perry’s success in the music industry was planned.
The user, who goes by Mister D’s Entertainment News, wrote that they were going to post about Perry’s “unfair” treatment by the press. They then found an article they wrote about her that they’re “so ashamed of,” adding, “I joined the lynch mob, even though I gave Witness a positive review. I’m so ashamed at my former self. Sorry, @katyperry I respect you.”
When someone asked why the press seems to have something against Perry, Mister D responded, “From what I know, her ‘downfall’—like that of Christina Aguilera—wasn’t organic. It was planned by ‘some’ people. And then there were writers, like me, who trashed her because it generated a lot of clicks, which = $.”
Mister D also shared Buzzing Pop’s post about the situation, clarifying that their “condemnation for generating hate clicks against Perry was for my former self,” not the outlets they wrote for.

Mister D isn’t the only journalist to speak out about the media’s apparent bias against Perry. Buzzing Pop also included excerpts from a Stereogum article written last year by former Pitchfork journalist Tom Breihan, about the first time he heard Perry’s song “Teenage Dream.”
“At the time, the Pitchfork higher-ups had decided that Katy Perry was insufficiently cool,” Breihan wrote, pointing out that the site only published a review of Perry’s 2010 album Teenage Dream in 2021. He added that Pitchfork “would not take Katy Perry seriously until Katy Perry’s moment was over.”
Fans on social media were divided over whether the press had anything to do with Perry’s career trajectory. Some said it didn’t help that she waited so long between albums, while others said her music just wasn’t as good anymore.
