On October 24, Ed Sheeran shared on Instagram that he tested positive for COVID-19. He stated that he will remain working, but will be doing live performances and interviews virtually from his home. Many people are concerned about Sheeran considering he is the mega mentor for this season of The Voice, but what does this mean for the show’s next round?

Sheeran’s Diagnosis Will Not Affect The Voice

As many die-hard fans of The Voice know, Sheeran is this season’s mega mentor. The mega mentor gets introduced to singers during the knockout round of the competition. Following Sheeran’s unfortunate announcement, many fans were concerned for the fate of the show. The knockout rounds are set to premiere tonight, but luckily they are pre-recorded.

In the knockout round, coaches pair two singers together to perform different songs. They will not be harmonizing or performing together as we saw in the battle rounds. Each singer meets with their partner, coach, and Sheeran to be advised for their upcoming battle.

Sheeran’s job as mega mentor is to provide insight in a different way than their coach. He’ll help with technique, song choice, stage presence, and really anything else that goes into these performances. Since this is pre-recorded, this stage of the competition is actually already over, so Sheeran’s Covid diagnosis will not affect the show.

Every year, The Voice assigns a well-known, successful artist as the mega mentor for each singer. In the past we’ve seen James Taylor, Taylor Swift, Snoop Dogg, and even Tim McGraw as mega mentors. The knockout rounds are always pre-recorded to give singers enough time to rehearse and improve before their performance.

How Will Sheeran Do as a Mega Mentor?

I think Sheeran will be a great mega mentor. His music is in a category of its own since he has such a unique sound. Not only is he extremely popular, he has also written songs for other artists like Justin Bieber, One Direction, Rita Ora, and more. Knowing the music industry from the song writing side as well makes him extremely versatile, which will help singers out throughout The Voice.

This singer-songwriter is releasing his fourth studio album on October 29. Music from this upcoming album is live on YouTube in the form of YouTube Shorts. There are 14 tracks on this album that encompass Sheeran’s current chapter in his life, songs written about both his wife and daughter.
