American Idol Season 20 premieres on ABC very soon, and the show is introducing a new twist to mark this milestone year. Judge Katy Perry teases that there will be a special Platinum Ticket in addition to the usual Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
‘American Idol’ Trailer Teases Season 20 Twist
The new trailer shows clips from various auditions, as the judges react to a whole new batch of talent. The clip features several emotional moments, as contestants share their stories and the judges get teary-eyed. At one point, a singer reveals that his nephew passed away, and Perry breaks down crying.
Another contestant performs Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” leaving the judges stunned as Luke Bryan declares, “Gosh!” Perry shows off the goosebumps she’s getting on her arms. It looks like this contestant will be the recipient of the new Platinum Ticket.
As Perry explains, there is one Platinum Ticket available in each city, in addition to the usual Golden Tickets that send singers to Hollywood Week. The Platinum Ticket apparently sends a contestant to Hollywood with “a little shortcut.”

When Does the New Season Premiere?
American Idol Season 20 will premiere on ABC Sunday, February 27, at 8/7c. It will also be available to stream on Hulu. All three judges (Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan) will be back at the table, along with host Ryan Seacrest.
However, mentor Bobby Bones will be sitting this season out due to scheduling conflicts. Filming for auditions began in Austin, Texas, last October, so some singers have had quite a long time to wait before their episodes air. Initial auditions were all virtual, instead of the usual in-person Idol Across America tour.
We can’t wait to find out more about the Platinum Ticket, and to see what other surprises are in store when the show returns for its 20th year.
